mouth culture are a Leicester alt rock trio building and developing their career in the music industry, releasing an album this year, touring with some familiar faces, and signing to in vogue records this is the year mouth culture take on the industry with rage and determination and I cannot wait to see what’s to come.
Despite only being around since 2019, the trio are taking on their music career with a storm, supporting whilst she sleeps in Sheffield at the end of this year is bound to be a show to remember. This year sharing stages with Beauty School Dropout and hitting the road with acres and teenage wrist. I’ve been a follower of mouth cultures for around a year now and its crazy how far the band have come in such a small amount of time, first discovering the band on TikTok I began to listen to the tracks they had out at that time and have followed their journey ever since. Attending shows in various cities over the UK the band have never failed to blow me away, with their stage presence, vocals, and heavy sound I know this band will make history and I’m here for it!
This year has defiantly been a year of millstones for the band “We are so stoked to announce we are signing with In Vogue Records. With Nick Moore and Bob Becker behind us, mixed with the best music we’ve ever written, it’s a really exciting time for everything Mouth Culture. We’re just getting started.” Says the band about their signing announcement.
Mishaps of my mid-twenties released 24th November 2023 captures mouth cultures sound spectacularly, with some sounds being more pop influenced and others have you feeling that rage! (No pun intended!) I am excited to see what’s to come with mouth culture in the future, bringing back the 2000s grunge, punk sound. The EP titled ‘mishaps of my mid-twenties’ touches on the challenges, situations, and emotions that the band have faced through growing up, with all the songs having a storyline to them, this title makes the EP feel as thou we are going through a journey as we listen.
Titled Mishaps of My Mid-twenties the album captures the journey of Mouth Culture, the talent the different sounds mouth culture have up their sleeves and overall, the insane energy the band have, all the tracks have a story, a vibe and all have well deserved spots on my playlist. being released at the end of 2023, I cannot wait to see what mouth culture achieve in 2024, tours, releases, and music videos it’s going to be a journey and I am here for it all. This is an exciting time for both Mouth Culture and the fans, and we cannot wait!
Track by track
‘Sharkbait’ Is the first song on the EP and by far my favourite track! Being their current top track on Spotify with 126.2k streams it is no secret that it is a fan favourite, it captures the energy and madness of the band, their refreshingly unique sound, and a song that will always put you in a good mood (in my dad’s case having it on max volume in the cars to the point you get stares from passers-by). Being the first track of the album shark bait captures the energy of mouth culture and their newer, heavier edge, hearing shark bait live is a whole different experience, the album was made to be played live, loud and with rage. I can smell the shark bait pits already!
The next song on the ep is Don’t Pull Up, similarly don’t pull up is another mosh pit high energy song, typical mouth culture releasing yet another banger! This song is another fan favourite being track 2 on Spotify. The Leicester accent popping through throughout the song, the British grungy sound is what I want to hear more of the music video that goes along with this song is also incredible. The music video featuring all the members dressed up, an almost story telling music video which gives super early 2000s music video vibes, reminding me of the videos that would play on kerrang growing up.
Again, is slightly softer to the first two tracks yet still has a rock grove to it, mouth culture reminds me of a lot of the bands my dad bought me up on when I was younger. The opening two tracks are vocally heavy showcasing jack Voss’ outstanding vocals, whereas again captures the talent of guitarist Clifford and bassist Todd Groome, a bunch of very talented musicians all together creating yet another classic tune that will forever take a proud spot on my playlist. Another great tune live!
Cherry red rage has a similar groove to again, yet when the chorus hits smash into the pit worthy, crowd hyping, heavy sound. capturing the whole bands musical talent, smashing vocals and harsher, heavier, and hyped vocals from jack pierce through the song, the songs final chorus, builds up through the song creating a euphoric moment with the final “RAGEEEEE” a definite crowd hype.
Johnny cold shoulder is a slower song for the band, again showing the talent of all the boys a slightly more stripped back sounds, softer guitar, and vocals, as the song goes on it gets slightly heavier yet still melodic feel. A song for the flashlights and crowd sways is something we all need, although the song is a little more stripped back than the other tracks, it still has the classic mouth culture not losing the groove with some electronic sound still peeking through just not as hardcore as previous tracks.
Sunny smile is a little heavier after the slightly more stripped back sound on the previous track, but is a song that builds up, the verses being a little more melodic with a more rock sounding chorus, a lively sounding track that is different to the others, with a more indie brit pop feel at the start building into a rockier edgy chorus.
Mishaps of my mid-twenties is the title track of the album, shortened to Mishaps The track captures the journey of the band, the ups the downs, the challenges, and the learning curves. The song’s lyrics are hand hitting, put into a melodic yet heavy feel song, the song is quite euphoric and emotional. The coming-of-age story is a great way to end the album, mishaps capture the feel of all the songs on the album combined, the song almost feels like a journey the heartfelt lyric combined with the heavier feel as we enter the chorus.
Overall Mishaps of My Mid-Twenties was one of my favourite releases of 2023 and exactly what the music industry needed, although I haven’t been a Mouth Culture fan for years, I instantly became a fan and after a few listens I was hooked. Being Super lucky able to experience most of the album live as well as their other insane singles.
Sharkbait music video
The band treated us to a Single release and music video. The mosh-pit ready catchy new single Sharkbait came with a crazy new music video, unleashing the start of the mishaps to my mid-twenties’ era. The gritty British homemade style video with aesthetic camera angles and artistic camera shots channels the bands vibes and personality. The video features cool shark masks which I personally think could become I iconic mascot for the band or we may even find the shark in the pits!
With that being said, get your shark fins ready to rageeeeee and join mouth culture at one of their UK dates
With the album being released this November, mouth culture has toured with some familiar faces and headlined multiple shows over the UK. One of their larger shows being at the Sheffield octagon with whilst she sleeps alongside holding absence and guild trip, that show was one to remember. An iconic venue, iconic friends and one of the best live performances from mouth culture so far, with jack also making an appearance on stage during whilst she sleeps set which I can imagine was a huge dream come true and he smashed it!
With that being said mouth culture are touring in just a few months all over the United Kingdom, which I suggest everyone goes and grabs a ticket! they are selling fast so make sure to grab one. Check out the music videos, their Instagram posts and their TikTok’s!
